Pest Control
The definition of a pest is something that is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Various pests become a problem at different times of the year. Rats and mice usually make their presence felt during the winter months when food is scarce outside but it's during the summer that we are bothered by the pesky insects. Flies, wasps, mosquitoes and fleas are most prevalent in the summer and each causes its own brand of problem. Summertime brings opportunities for lots of outdoor activities such as picnics but summer also brings out the insect population which can be annoying at best and lethal at worst.
Mosquitoes are irritating but don't yet carry any dangerous diseases in the UK. You can prevent too many of them breeding in your garden by limiting the amount of standing water available as this is where they breed. It only takes a thimble full of water to produce a flurry of mosquitoes, so birdbaths, ponds and puddles should be limited as much as possible. If you do have a pond you may consider installing a fountain in order to agitate the water as mosquitoes only breed in still water. Flies can transmit diseases such as E. coli and salmonella by landing on uncovered food. Many homeowners have a problem with flies because these insects build their colonies near ready food sources. All you can really do is to keep all food covered, especially when picnicking. Fleas from dogs and cats can produce huge populations in your carpets if left unchecked and need to be tackled from both points: on the animals themselves and all your furnishings. Your vet can advise you on the best course of action to treat your pets, while we can fumigate your house.

Wasps are the most troublesome summer pest to most people because of their potential to sting. A number of factors cause them to become more aggressive at the end of the summer. The reason wasps become such a pest is due to their life cycle. In spring the queen wasp emerges from her overwintering home and builds a small nest in which to lay her first eggs. If this nest is in your attic or anywhere else too close for comfort it is vital that you employ a professional to remove it as to attempt to do so yourself is dangerous.

Throughout the summer the newly hatched worker wasps extend the nest to accommodate all the new eggs and larvae. A nest can grow to enormous proportions in a relatively short space of time, so nip it
in the bud as soon as it's spotted. As summer comes to an end, the queen lays special eggs which produce fertile females which will become next year's queen wasps. The workers are now redundant so they leave the nest and set off to celebrate by looking for good food and drink. They especially savour sweet food which is why they head straight for the jam sandwiches, squash and other picnic staples. They also enjoy fallen fruit which, as it rots, produces natural alcohol. Unfortunately the wasps can't handle their drink and this is when they become particularly aggressive.
